Radiation

Radiation Therapy at Horizon Cancer Care

Radiation therapy uses high-energy beams to destroy cancer cells by damaging their DNA. It is a highly localized treatment designed to target tumors while protecting surrounding normal tissues. We use it for all these purposes:

As a primary treatment
After surgery to reduce recurrence risk
Before surgery to shrink tumors
Along with chemotherapy (chemoradiation)
For symptom relief in advanced disease

How We Manage Radiation Treatment

While radiation delivery is done at advanced radiation facilities, all medical decisions remain under our oncology supervision.

Decision, indication and timing
Planning sequence with surgery or chemotherapy
Review of radiation protocols
Monitoring response and toxicity
Modification of systemic therapy if needed

We remain the primary point of contact throughout treatment

Radiation and fertility

For young women receiving pelvic radiation, we proactively discuss fertility preservation options such as egg/embryo freezing and ovarian protection strategies. For men receiving pelvic or testicular radiation, we offer sperm cryopreservation before treatment begins, because radiation to the pelvis can impact ovarian and testicular function and future reproductive potential.

Modern Radiation Techniques

Our radiation options include:

3D Conformal Radiation Therapy (3D-CRT)
Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)
Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT)
Stereotactic techniques for selected cases

Benefits

Higher tumor precision
Reduced exposure to normal organs
Better functional preservation
Fewer long-term complications

When Is Radiation Required?

Breast cancer (post-surgery)
Head & neck cancers
Cervical cancer
Rectal cancer
Brain tumors
Lung cancer
Palliative treatment for bone pain or bleeding tumors
Esophageal cancers
Sarcomas

Treatment schedules vary from short hypofractionated courses to longer conventional regimens depending on cancer type.

Monitoring and Side Effect Care

Radiation side effects are usually localized to the treated area. Possible effects include:

Skin irritation
Fatigue
Swallowing discomfort (in head & neck cases)
Bowel or bladder irritation (pelvic radiation)

We monitor weekly during treatment and intervene early to prevent complications. Post-radiation follow-up is structured and continuous.
